Documentation is not a formality
In peptide research the compound and its paperwork are the same deliverable. A vial without a verifiable certificate is a vial of unknown composition, and a certificate without a matching lot number is a document of unknown relevance. The paperwork is a working requirement for any experiment that expects to be repeated.
Standards across the market vary widely. Some suppliers provide lot-specific certificates with full chromatographic data. Others provide a generic specification sheet that describes what the compound is supposed to be rather than what testing showed it to be. That gap matters every time a result has to be explained, defended or replicated.
The reproducibility problem
Reproducibility starts with knowing exactly what went into the experiment: the specific lot, its verified purity, its identity confirmation and how it was stored. Compounds from suppliers who reuse certificates, round purity figures or ship without lot identification bring an undocumented variable with them.
That variable compounds over time. A result obtained with one batch may not hold with the next if the two differ in purity, impurity profile or degradation, differences a lot-specific certificate would reveal and a generic sheet would hide.
What a COA should contain
At minimum: the compound name in standard nomenclature, a lot number that matches the label, the synthesis date, HPLC purity with the method noted, mass-spectrometry identity confirmation showing observed versus expected molecular weight, the appearance of the lyophilized product, storage conditions and a retest or expiry date.
Ideally the certificate also includes the chromatogram itself, not just the calculated percentage, so the impurity profile can be read directly. That detail matters for work that is sensitive to trace contaminants.
Documentation as a trust signal
A supplier's willingness to publish detailed, lot-specific documentation before purchase says something on its own. Certificates available on the product page, rather than behind a login or on request, correlate with operational seriousness. The paperwork is evidence about the compound and evidence about the company.
Every Anchor Bay Labs lot ships with its own Certificate of Analysis, published to the certificate library and linked from the product page before purchase. All products are designated Research Use Only.
